Hi Paul,

Everyone keeps telling me if you weren't born with it you won't get it. I have never been very flexible. I am almost 40 and am a Black Belt in TKD. I was wondering what your opinion is on this. While I don't expect I will ever do the splits like Jean Claude Vandam, I would still like to be able to kick to the head. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There is no doubt that if you use the Elastic Steel method your flexibillity will improve like you wouldn't believe. Why not invest in the book and stick with the program for a few months. I tell you now you will be gobsmacked!

Hi
Dont listen to them! Im sure its not your body structure that makes you unflexible.
Try to raise one leg to the side in a ninety degree angle (e.g on a chair), then try with the other leg.
If you can do this, your body structure will allow you do a side split. No muscles run form one leg to the other. Its tension, that prevents you from doing a side split. Based on you previous experiences, like sitting all day at work or exercising incorrectly, your nervous system has picked a favorite length for every muscle in your body and prefers to keep it that way. Whenever you reach too far compared to this “standard”, your body will tighten up and reins your muscles in.
If you try something really aggressive that you have never done before (like splits) the body panics and tightens up your muscles with all its might with results in injury.
So when you fell inflexible it has nothing to do with “short muscles”. You need to change “the muscle software” to get more flexible and let your muscles to slide out to their full length. That can be done in any age.
