I have recently discovered the elastic steel method and look forward to seeing if this works for me and any help would be most appreciated. My biggest limitation is my flexibility (very common) but my restriction is rather more advanced than most would believe. My biggest restrictions are in the rotation of my hips especially on the left side and the flexibility of my low back into flexion. It is so severe that I am unable to sit in lotus position (crossed legs) and when attempting long sitting I am unable to sit comfortably without rocking into posterior tilt with my pelvis. Does anyone have any information as to how I can improve this.

Welcome to the forum.
That restriction you write in the test.Is that due to injury or?

Hi Thank your for responding. No I have never sustained an injury to my hips as i can recall and i do not have any congenital deformities with my hips they just are not very flexible. So much so that although pauls book is fantastic i am unable to perform the side spilt exercises as i cannot sit comfotably in these positions. Major struggle!!!!!!

Tight muscles are commen, coz we sit down a lot nowa'days :)
I have tight hip flexors too and i actually find it more painfull when i work on front split, than side split.
You should do plenty of exercises for the hip flexors muscles like lunges. Another nice exercise is lunge with you rear knee resting on the floor. You rear knee should point down, not to the side. Pad you knee well with a pillow or blanket.
For the rotation of the hip the butterfly is a nice stretch.
If you have trouble sitting with your back straight. Use a wall so you can remind upright.
Hope it helps

Hi, just had a look at the stretch you mentioned and found a nice video of paul demonstrating it, will put more focus on this during my training schedule and see what happens.
Thanks for the info,
Anthony

What i would also add to that is to spend some time in the mermaid. I understand that with tight hips tyou might struggle to get into this but if you have the dvd then it shows how you can get into it from the straddle position. You can start from a very slight straddle and slowly build it up. This will help later with your splits training.
