When I bought the manual, I emailed Paul and told him that if this is another B.S I will make sure people know about. I also told him that If I get my split before my birthday, October 18th, I will also scream it out loud.
Well listen up, today is October 2nd, I did a full split and it feels GOOD.
That's right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Way to go rocketone!
Can I ask... before you started training with elastic steel, how close to the splits were you?
How long has it taken you to get there?
Can you now slide into splits cold, or do you get there through stretching over a few minutes?
Sorry for so many questions, but I am inspired by your progress!!
All the best!

Hey Kit,
thank you!
In the second week of July, I was more than a foot away from the 180 degrees. It took me a chunk of July and whole August and September.
Right now I just put my hands on the floor and feet out. I say 3-4 inches of the ground. I can force it to 180 degrees if I want to. I can go through a couple of contract's and relaxe's and be at 180.
FYI
I don't feel like I am actually stretching.
How are you doing? Ask away Whatever I can help with.

Congratulations Rocketone,
I heard people say that they don't feel like they are stretching. Can you sort of explain what do mean by that.
When you do a split and you sit with your legs as out as possible, how long does it take before muscles begin to cramp? Do they cramp at all?
rocketone
10-10-2005, 06:39 PM
Hey Powerkick,
I don't know what other people feel when they stretch. I just got to the point, when I do a split I don't feel that pain that you would usually feel. You know the stretching pain. Nah, no cramping. Comfort and pleasure. I been looking forward to this for years and years. Now I earned it, I enjoy it.
I think that when muscle cramp or hurt you are doing something wrong. In fact pain is a signal that you are doing something wrong. That's what it is there for.
If you want to ask more question, go ahead. Whatever I can help with.

Hi ,
Congratulations for your achievement! I know it?s not easy; I?ve tried many times, and didn?t get close. I have a few questions for you, and any help would be appreciated:
1? When you start elastic steel method, how far were you from front and side spilts ( cm, or inches) ?
2? How long (moths) did it take you to achieve front and side split?
3? How many hours/week did you trained? A sample week schedule would be appreciated.
Please free to give any tips/suggestions/impression that you think would be useful.
Thank you for your time.

Thanks Vic,
It's very hard for some of us, it's been many years I know.
I only do the side one. I was over a foot away from 180, when I started.
It took over two months.
This is how I did it.
Monday Wensday Friday all the warm ups all exercises and stretches. (I only did the side split, not the front)
Monday-Saturday I did morning warm up and easy stretches.
Also every day most day even twice a day I did the oil rub. I screwed up 4 pairs of pants for that. Paul wrote to me that it works and it's freaking gold! I did the program without the oil for few weeks, than I added the oil, very big difference. It all came together!
Vic let me know, if anything else I can answer for you.
Oil rub? What is that? You rub oil into your legs? What kind of oil and why?

Hi Roketone,
Thank your for your answers, it?s very kind of you to help us by telling about your experience. I have still few more questions:
1) Can you be more specific about the routine you used (you said ?all the stretches? ) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday?
Personally I do in one stretching session:
Light stretches
Extended ( band) stretches
Deep Stretches.
Do you did the same, or did you did more?
2) Can you tell me about the duration of your morning and evening routines? (the routine I outlined before take me a least one hour)
3) And finally, can you tell me more about what kind of oil did you use, and how?
Thank you for your time and your suggestions.

Kit, I am not sure I can answer all your questions, but this is from what Paul adviced me and my experience with it.
OUt of few oils that (I think all are warming) I use Castor. Others were seasame and I think pepper oil or something.
According to Paul it warms up the muscles deeply. It stimulates the blood flow and other benefits. I don't know the scientific ideas but I sure helped me. Massage like this: Calves, hams, butt, back, outer thigh, quads from stomach to knee and inner thigh. Massage very deep. The figers will get sore but that will pass.
Let me look at Vic's questions.
I feel your struggle.

All stretches I meant deep stretches and easy, light stretches.
Personally I do in one stretching session:
Light stretches
Extended ( band) stretches
Extended exercises are NOT stretches. Trust me, I made sure. They are exercises. LIke the one on the back, (hamstring one) you don't just hold, you bring it up and down. This builds up a muscles through full motion.
Deep Stretches.
Do you did the same, or did you did more?
I went exactly like it said in the book. Morning 6 times a week, only joint warm ups, cardio, light stretches, and swings.
At night, I did the rub with oil, first regular conditioning, than extended conditioning, that is not stretches, than some kick stuff, than side split stretrches.
2) Can you tell me about the duration of your morning and evening routines? (the routine I outlined before take me a least one hour)
My morning is like 20 minutes depending on interuptions.
The night routine is like 40 minutes.
One hour, you said? Why that long? Do you do allot of reps or do the stretches for a long time?
3) And finally, can you tell me more about what kind of oil did you use, and how?

I recently began to use Castor oil and Mustard oil. I was told to experiment with a few, for now I am sticking with this. It's pretty good. I don't know if using oil is original to E.S. or Paul Z. but it helps allot.
Guys, I would say all you have to do is rub the oil really hard. Do it from all the angles, than do the stretches. Light stretches and than deep stretches.
What happened with me was this: I was doing great, than I had a plateu (sp?) so I wrote to Paul Z. for help. He advices a few things including the oil. Obviously it works.
Rocketone,
have you tried doing the extended length conditioning every day or more than 3 days a week?

Hi Genseng,
what I meant was to rub the muscles the same way they run, and across.
So hamstring for instance is up and down and side to side. Also pressing into the muscle with fingers helps.
I think I saw someone posted the sequence, in this thread.
Just follow that sequence, before stretching or before you work out.

Hi Allstretch,
thank you for trying to answer my question.
Rocketone posted, starting with calves and ending with thigh, is that what you are talking about?
Do I warm up before the oil rub? Do I do the rub and than warm up?
Can you list everything and the order?
Thanks, your helps is really appreciated.

The oil massage secret is getting out :D
Genseng,
I would not bother warming up than doing the massage, than working out and so on. I do a through massage first, than warm up and than stretch.
If you have not tried it, you may be pleasantly amazed. I heard that babies have more fat that adults, can that be why they (babies) are so flexible.
P.S. the elasticsteel web page had this slogan "become so flexible that babies will envy you" or something like that.
Allstretch
10-22-2005, 09:13 PM
I don't know about the baby fat.
I used to do joint exercises than massage than cardio than stretch.
Right now, I only do a good finger warm up. Basically I open and close the fist, and more the wrist around. Than I do the massage, than warm up, and than stretch. I bet if some did an experiment (may be Paul Z. did already) about oil warm up and not oil warm up, the people who used oil will be more flexable.
Also Genseng, the more you massage the better the stretch.
One day I want to go to a professional massage specialist and have them massage me, than I want to test my flexibility. That would be nice.

Guys I got to thank you for posting about the oil massage.
I got the front split with my left leg in front, but still struggled with right leg in front. Yesterday I read the thread that rocketone started. I drove to the natural forces and got castor oil. Before the work out yesterday I massage the oil into my legs, like you said. Than I stretched and I almost nailed the front split with right leg in front. Today I am mad sore, but good sore. Why don't every one do it? I am pretty unflexible, that means that it should help other people.
Thanks again 8)

Hi roketone:
Well it takes me one hour because:
Warm-up
5 minutes
Light stretches (15-20 seconds holds)
10 minutes
Extended conditioning (3 exercises * 150 reps each side)
20 minutes
Deep stretches ( 2 x each exercise each side 20-25 sec holds)
35 minutes
Total: 1 hour 10 minutes
Either way, what you achieved, 2 months and a half for side splits, coming from one foot (30 cm), it?s AMAZING! I cannot congratulate you enough.
Maybe I should try the oil think?.

Tank?s for you?re reply, I have few more questions for you :D , and I hope it wont take to much of your time:
Can you tell me the number of sets and reps per leg you used in extend conditioning?
How long did you hold the each stretch in the deep stretches sequence?
How old are you?
Thank you for your time.
rocketone
10-27-2005, 05:18 PM
Vic,
by your questions I can guess that you are in the desperate hole, I was before.
I tried the best I could to stick to the regement. But you know, sometimes I would do 30 reps, when I could not afford the time. In the high 80's was average.
I did the hamstrings, add. and abd. 3 exercises. When I had the time, I would do that follow with stretch than do other ext. length, than stretch.
About holding the stretch, this what I noticed. If I did not massage with oil the stretches don't improve, no matter how long I hold. If I do a through oil massage, than the longer I hold and the more times per stretch, the more the results. <- don't over do on that.
I am close to 40, put it this way :)
but you know what, everyone wants to achieve something. I always wanted a split.
Because you asked about the age, I can assume that you are even older than me.
Hey, boys will be boys.
Don't worry about it, if anything that I did can help you or anyone else I am glad to help.

Rocketone - I was about to to post and I read your post. You said that you had a better stretch when you did the massage on yourself.
Today I did it for the second time, monday was the first time. It works like a warm up I think. You know warm muscles stretch better. Same here, I think the oil warms up the muscles. Because I was able to stretch past my limits. I was sore tuesday and wensday, but I did again today, and it does help.
Where did you hear about this?
Thanks for posting about it, it was kind of you.

No problem.
Paul Zaichik, the guy who wrote the E.S. book told me about it. I felt pretty desperate back than, he was nice enough to encourage me. It did not sound normal when he told me to try it. I always thought of stretches as stretches. Massage is what old people do, and oil on the skin is what women do. But now just like I got a 180 split, my mind turned 180 as well. Sometimes a slightly open mind is a good thing :)
If it does work like a warm up, it is a very good warm up than.
How far are you from the split? Let me know when you got it? I want to know how fast I got it compared to other people.
I got two of my workout bodies doing it too, so it's interesting to know.

Hello, I am new.
I am thinking about getting the book on stretching. Few days ago I browsed and found this forum and you talking about the castor oil. I tried the castor oil today and it did not do anything. I don't do carate or anything, just lift weights at the Y. Basically over the years, I am becoming more tighter and tighter. My strength is pretty descent, but my flexibility is even worth than it was, when I was younger, and than it was pretty bad.
If I stand and bend forward, I barely touch my lower knees.
So this is what I did, with oil today.
I got into the shower (because, I did not wanted to get it on the carpet), and I placed the oil on my hamstrings. May be 4 oz or so. I waited for minutes and tried to bend forward. I tried a few times, but no change.
Now, I only put it on the hamstrings, because I am most interested in the flexibility in my hamstrings. If I can touch my toes, I will be pretty happy.
If you guys can give me any suggestions, I will really appreciate them.

Did you warm up? Cardio, joint rotations, etc?

Bending your body forward is not just stretching the hamstrings.
Depending your position, other muscles such as calves, gluteus and lower back may be preventing you from touching your toes.
If you guys can give me any suggestions, I will really appreciate them.
Try to rub the oil into all the muscles. At least calves, hamstrings, glutes and lower back. Make sure to warm up. Rub the oil using deep strokes. Make sure to nead the muscles.
Let us know how it went.

regarding the oil, it is clear it improves your ability to go into deeper stretches, my question is as follows, would you become dependent on it to hold flexibility gained in that manner? So if you were to be able to do the full splits with the use of the oil, would not using it mean that you would lose the ability to perform the full splits?

Hi M. Zarate and welcome to the forum.
From experience, you should not become dependent on the oil massage. Once you develop the level of flexibility you desire, you must maintain the strength in that domain of movement. At that point oil massage is not longer required.
You can than use the massage, when you want to speed up recovery from exercises, warm up on cold days, etc.
I hope this answer your question. Please post if other questions arise.

I made little progress on left front split, and in the side splits I can?t tell.
It?s true I feel I?m reaching a plateau, so I think I will go for the oil massage.
The deep stretches sequences works: I fell less and less tense in the stretched positions every time I stretch.
I plan to focus on regular conditioning and extended conditioning for the next two weeks and then add the castor oil massages.
Do you guys actually measure your progress in any way? Because the eye can deceive?
If you do measure, how do you do it?

Also I feel it, if the muscles is tight or not tight.
Vic, see if you can do the extended cond. followed by deep stretches.
But yeah if you hit a plateau, the castor should do it.

Vic,
if you have not done extended length conditioning before, you may be very sore at first. I was.
I did measure at first, just to see if the progress goes. Once I saw it going, I did not want to measure anymore.
Also, I lately tapered down on oil massages. But I love extended length conditioning. It's like a perfect combination of strength and flexibility. I still do other exercises like squats, lounges and bla bla bla. But I finish with extended length.
Like Allstretch said, try extended length and than deep stretches.
You may get some funny feeling in your legs.

Vic,
about oil massage.
Here is what worked for me.
It takes work. You must kneed the muscles. Your fingers must go into those muscles everywhich way, with allot of pressure.
Also I got the greatest results when I began massaging in the morning before shower and at night before shower. This is in addition to pre-work out massage. I did it for few weeks till I got the flexibility. I don't do it anymore. So it may be worth it to go all out for a while.
About the knees, two things may help you. Keep the toes pulled back, and heels stick out like a side kick. (opposite of pointing the toes.) And keep the quads squeezed, that will help with knee pain.
Also like someone else wrote, too much dynamic conditioning is probably no good when you started the extended length.

I did light stretches Monday though Friday or Saturday. I tried to do morning but sometimes I did them later on during the day.
I did the deep stretches Monday wensday and friday (sometimes saturday or sunday instead of other day)
Extended length usually before deep stretches.
Oil I did before each deep work out, sometimes before light work out.
I did oil every morning and every night, regardless of the day. (per Zaichik's advice.)
I massaged the **** out of my muscles till they were red and fluffy.
I don't think I would keep this up for long, but my results were really seen. Almost every time or every other time, I would see improvement.
Other people here had got help from oil, so I know that I am not crazy.

Castor oil massage if properly done can do wonders.
Depending on the troubled spot different techniques are used.
You may want to use a fist to to twist it into the muscles or even make small circles.
Another method is to saturate a cloth with oil and place that on the injured spot. Cover the saturated cloth with plastic. On the top of that place a heat pad. Keep that on for 30-60 minutes.
You wife may respond better to that one

I just tryed it with castor oil and the first thing I found out is, I need to shave my legs LOL.
I did my hips where I was getting that pain spoken about in my post and then hit some painful areas along my adductors and hamstrings. Now I massaged the entire leg area, very messy but I had an excuse. Then I aimed for the tender area's, the areas with what massage people call a knot. Then I worked the sucker something chronic.
Then I stretched. It felt great, I dont know if I gained any range of motion within the hips but if was easy to stretch and comfortable with alot less natural muscular resistance.
Guys, thanks so much again.

Hi Vinz,
Here is what I learned about castor oil.
- You can warm it up in a pan if you like prior to massage
-You must rub it deeply into the muscles. It's texture will provide resistance, which will be warming. Your skin will be red like a raw steak.
-Either do it in the shower or wear old clothes. P.S. if you do it in the shower, make sure you wash the tube well, or someone will slip.
I actually prefer to wear old clothes, this way I can leave the oil on while working out.
It definitely does work, try the tips above and will feel it.
Thanks for the quick reply!
It definitly helps to warm up the oil.
Back to practice now...

If you can isolate the muscle or the tendon, like in the back of the knee. Rub that from both sides separately. Each one inside and out side.
Do that even on the days when you don't stretch. It helps allot.

Hi guys
Do I apply the oil in its undiluted form.
If applying it on in the shower, how long do i leave it on before I shower it off, or do I leave it on for training.
Cheers guys

Aloprey,
how do you want to dilute it? With water? I think the thicker the better.
Also, like many others said on here, don't forget to rub it hard.
My preference is to do the massage, than put on greasy pants and than work out. Kicks, stretches, etc. Than when I am done massage again and than take a shower.
Wash the tub well lol
If you do it right, you will know.

Don't dilute it.
Taking a shower after it and than working out and another shower, that's too much. If you work out at home, than definitely leave it on.

Thanks johnny. Got Castor oil yesterday, tried it in the evening. Oh my god, my hands were tired.
Guys, how long approx should it take to do both legs. Dont want to be going over board. Or is it horses for courses?
1 other question for anybody using it. How often do you add apple cider vinegar to your water a day, and how long do you keep doing it for?? Is it a continuos process or do you do it for a period of time like a month?
Cheers

I read somewhere in the forum that you star with calves, than go to hams, than thighs inner and outer, than butt and back, than quads.

I pretty much do that.
If I am pressed for time, I do calves, than hams (very thoroughly),
than glutes. When you massages hams well, you usully get inner thighs too.

So for both legs, that should take about 10 mins in total?? I spent about 10 mins on 1 leg, no wonder my fingers are like jelly this morning

Here is a tip that may help.
I only use fingers for back of the leg, calves and hamstrings.
The adductors and abductors and glutes I use fists. Just press them into the muscles and rub up and down or twist.
