Hi there
I have been getting back into my freestyle kickboxing training over the past month after taking 3 years out (i trained for 5 years before that). Im loving training again although i must say my hips have been pretty sore in the mornings.
I have a problem however in that i have a pain in my left hip - this is something that used to bother me when i originally trained too.
In training the problem is most noticable when throwing a left roundhouse kick. I find it hard to rotate my hips and also the pivit on the right leg. I can do it but it causes a shooting pain in the hip on the leg, so in training i have been throwing a relatively effective left roundhouse without piviting which i know is wrong and prob adding to the problem (when throwing right roundhouse i can get good height and can pivit on the left with ease) It is also the same with the left hook-kick and side kick.
When not training i notice it ie if i'm sitting in a chair it is fin unless i try to open my legs wider than normal - the right is fine and flexible but the left causes pain again. Also if i lie on my back with my knees bent and feet on the floor and drop my left knee out towards the floor i get limited range and the same pain.
Please help me as im getting pretty frustrated
;) Thanks for reading

Ive been doing the Squats, deadlifts and hip beds that paul demonstrates in one of his free vids as well as the butterfly stretch and rotator stretch he shows in another vid. Directly after these exercises i gain full range of motion in my left hip which is great. Prob is after an hour or so it goes back to the original state?! and ideas??
Im wondering if Paul's book on stretching will help?

Seems like you have some weakness in that hip and if you experienced it for a long period of time, im sure you hip muscle is tight.
Did you ever see a doctor with this?
You said you got improved range of motion after doing death lift and squat. Did the pain dissappear or fade?
One option is to do up to 100 squats and death lift through out the day, like some in the morning, some aftenoon and some later in the evening.
Remember to do some light stretching for the hip and lower back after each set

Hi Ricky - and thanks for getting back to me :)
Ive had it (or should i say noticed it) since i started martial arts about 6 years ago. prob already had it but had never needed to move my legs beyond there normal range.
I have never seen a doctor but i think i will next wee just to be sure its nothing out of the ordinary - don't wanna make it worse if that is the case.
Well when i do ie 3 sets of 40-50 squats and the same for deadlifts the pain in the hip disappears temporarily but within an hour (if that) it returns.
I had my first yoga class today so im hoping this will help - in the meantime I will try what you suggest and also make that doc appointment.
Thanks again
Rick

How is your current flexibility level? Did you do any stretching in the periode you didnt do martial art?
Remember to listen to your body when you do the conditioning exercises (squat, deadlift). Back off if you experience increase pain in the hip.
Did you over experience pain or tightness in your lower back?

Hi Ricky - just realise we share the same name lol
My flexability is reasonable for example if stand with my back to the wall and a partner lifts my leg in front kick or side kick position (shoulder to the wall) my leg is raised to head height quite easily but i cannot actually lift it and hold it there on my own. When the partner lowers the leg i get a short sharp pain in the hip of the paised leg for a second on release. I can however kick head height once warmed up - more so with my right leg (in 5'10 175cm).
For another example its the same story if i sit on the floor legs opened wide out with a parther sat infront the same way with our feet touching and we use eachothers legs to get a stretch i can get pretty wide but if i sit on the floor on my own i can only get about 90 degrees. I have noticed that my hips a rather sore - epecially the left - the day after training, sorer than i remember when i began martial arts.
I did stretch a bit stretching and some bag training here and there in my three years off although i still did weights ran - so i was still very active.
My back is fine although if i standing for long periods i do get a sore lower back buts apart from that its okay.
Thanks again mate - appreciate youre advice.

Hi Rick
I would sugget a Master of Science in Chiropractic. Resently i had some soreness and light pain in my hip join as well. I went to a Master of Science in Chiropractic and he found out that my pelvis was tilted a tiny bit to one lateral side, which cause the discomfort in the hip and lower back. When the pelvis is tilted, the join is placed in the right position and the muscles around the join and spine will tight up.
He fixed the problem in 15 min :)

Hi mate
yeah that sounds about right i can see a slight tilt when i stand and then slide my feet out to the side as if to go into the box split i can see it tilt to the tight.
Where are you from? - i in London i wondered which guy you saw?
Also how did he fix it? was it a massage etc and has h fixed it perminantly?

Im living in Denmark, but im sure you can find a good Chiropractor in London.
He fix it buy manipulation the joins in my spine and hip. In that way the spine and pelvis is the right aligment and the hip and knee join will follow as well

There's an exercise in the ES book for hip rotators that might be of help. I don't know what your trouble is. Might be flexibility, strength, muscle imbalance, technique, etc. If I were you I will get the ES book, the HFS and kicks dvds. The free vids are very helpful but they are not a complete program.

Hello.
If you've been experiencing this for the last six years there is something other than hip weakness. yes this is part of it but you might want to consider 2 things and a doctor will be able to confirm. First off after sighting do you experience pain in the hip area when standing up?
Let me explain I've been training in Kenpo karate/kickboxing for the last 9 years. After class in April I wasn't able to walk down a flight of stairs. After An x-ray, bone scan, mri and several doctor appointment I was diagnosed with femoralaceatabular impingement. FAI for short. Basically the head of my femur is misshaped and doesn't sit correctly into the socket (acetablum) this has caused premature arthritis. There are surgeries to correct this however it depends on the severity of the wear of the joint and the shape of the bone, In my case my only option is hip replacement which will greatly limit my training. I hope this gives you a little more info and something to check into.
